Zoom fatigue? Kiss lack-lustre meetings goodbye with these top tips
You may not have thought about it like this BUT every time you switch your camera on you are doing exactly what I did every day as a reporter.
YOU are reporting LIVE to your audience.
As a TV reporter I was always fighting to keep my audience’s attention.
Think about when you last watched the news or Netflix – were you sitting down glued to the screen?
My bet is you weren’t.
When communicating but especially when communicating through a screen it’s tough to keep your audience’s attention.
Even more so when the average human attention span is shorter than a Goldfish’s according to a recent Microsoft study.
Here are some tips to help reduce distractions, so you have more chance of making your message heard:
1. TEST THE TECH
Check before you’re live that your sound and video works
Turn up on time. Would you be late for a face-to-face meeting?
Always (always) assume you are LIVE
2. THINK ABOUT THE SHOT
Frame yourself so your head and shoulders are in the centre of the screen.
Make sure there isn’t a washing basket or clutter in the background.
If you want to be heard, you need to be seen, invest in a ring light.
What is my body language saying? Am I present, engaged and interested.
Things go wrong. Often. Stay calm.
3. HAVE A CLEAR AGENDA & STRUCTURE
Have a clear agenda and be razor sharp about the purpose and objective of the meeting
No Jargon. Keep it Simple
HOOK, HOLD, HELP - H- What’s your headline? H - What are your 3 key points? -H - What help/action do you need?
And remember when a camera is on you are always, LIVE.
