Hook, line and sinker….do your messages land?

Imagine a hungry whale swimming through the ocean scooping up everything in its path. It gobbles every tasty morsel, the fish and krill - then spits out all the junk. That's what our brains do as we listen to someone present - we filter information and only pay attention to the bits relevant to us.

When you have so much information it can be difficult working out what to share.

Every detail can seem important.

But the reality is your audience doesn’t have the time, the capacity or attention span to take it all in.

Good communicators are respectful of that, and deliver information in a succinct and clear way.

It can seem effortless but what they’re working hard to do is put their AUDIENCE FIRST.

By shifting your mindset to always consider your audience:

  • You'll earn trust and gain buy-in quickly

  • Influence decision makers

  • Change opinions

  • Hold attention

  • Win business

Before pitching, presenting or any high stakes conversation start by asking yourself:

1. What is my objective?

  • Is it to give confidence the project is on track?

  • Get more funding?

  • Gain approval to move ahead?

2. Who is my audience and what do they care about in this context?

When you're super clear on your OBJECTIVE and your AUDIENCE, check if your messages pass the whale test - will they be gobbled up or spat out and discarded?

If you want to learn more ways to engage and influence your audience why not book a workshop or 1:1 coaching.
